Todd Brunson is the son of Doyle Brunson, maverick and iconic professional poker player. Brunson was born in 1969 and unlike many other poker players who grew up with professional poker player parents, Brunson was well into his studies at Texas Tech University before he learned how to play the game. Right before he started his senior year of his degree, he dropped out of school and began playing poker professionally, many times with his already famous father at the tables of the Bellagio.
He started his professional poker career by playing mainly cash games. It has only been over the last three years that he has started playing in major tournaments. He won his first bracelet in the 2005 World Series of Poker Omaha High Low tournament. This made Brunson and his father the first father-son combination to ever win bracelets at the World Series of Poker. When his father wrote his book ‘Super System 2’, Brunson wrote the section on Seven Card Stud High Low Eight Or Better chapter.
Brunson’s nickname in the poker community is ‘Darkhorse’ and he received it from being the underdog in a tournament in which he outlasted many other professional players. He played against Johnny Chan in the Poker Superstars 2 Grand Final and against Antonio Esfandiari in the Poker Superstars 3, beating him and taking him the $400,000 first prize. Brunson’s two day $13.5 million dollar winning streak during a $50,000-$100,000 Limit Hold’Em game is chronicled in the 2005 book,‘The Professor, the Banker, and the Suicide King’.
Brunson is regular on GSN’s High Stakes Poker television series and his current live winnings as of 2008 exceed $3,200,000. Some of that money was won in the following tournaments:
